vickie mathas A Portfolio of 9 Art Quilts
|
Vickie Mathas has dedicated her life to artistic endeavors in a variety of genres. She has been exploring fiber arts since 1999, and continues to add new techniques and media to her works known as Totem Images. Vickie earned a BA in Art from Rowan University, and an MA in Human Development from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Vickie maintained a dual career as an elementary school art teacher and working artist for over 30 years. Now retired from the public schools, she is working full time as a studio artist and presenter. Her work is currently shown at the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, NJ and the Home Fine Art Gallery in Mount Holly, NJ. Vickie invites challenges and commissions from the public. I draw my inspiration from my surroundings. I try to capture the textures, colors and lines hidden in natures palette and beyond. Created images are the result of a rendering of natural and man-made materials. They evolve through a creative process that drives my energy to express my vision called, Totem Images. These are the objects and symbols I use to provide a more intimate awareness of our environment through my art. Art quilts have become the medium of my artistic expression. Inspiration can come from anywhere in my environment. Once an idea has been formed, I then choose among an array of techniques and materials to complete each piece. The quilting process follows as I choose fabrics and decide upon the stitching that will best express the desired image. Embellishment follows, taking a variety of forms and methods. Finally, the piece is finished through binding, and a story is written about each piece, hand printed, signed, and sewn on the back. All of my work is then ready to hang. I find inspiration from many venues, sometimes through photography, but often through observation and appreciation of the natural world. That is why many of my images are animals or botanicals. Others are a result of a challenge to create an image/expression from an idea outside my practiced genre. I benefit from the exploration of techniques and media increasing my vocabulary for expression. For me, it is the connection of line into texture. I have always had a strong sense of using line, no matter what technique or medium I have used. No Press Available. Email: vmathas@gmail.com Phone: 856-235-8422 |
